If there was a concert to see which band in Halifax has the coolest name, Windom Earle would win hands down. Taking their moniker from the bad guy in cult TV show Twin Peaks, they’ve been making cool indie dance music under the leadership of Stephan MacLeod since the late ’90s. Their reputation has been built on their raucous live shows, but they’ve also been slowly building a solid CD library, most of which can be downloaded from their website. Goldwave, their fourth album, doesn’t quite manage to capture the energy of their live show, but comes close enough on occasion that anyone who has been lucky enough to see a concert won’t be completely disappointed. Combining equal parts the Go! Team, Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet and New Order, Windom Earle make music that makes you want to dance. The majority of the tracks are instrumentals, driven by a mix of synthesisers and guitars although the occasional glockenspiel and trumpets helps to fill out the sound — that’s the advantage of having 11 people on hand to help out. Goldwave might not be a classic album by any means, but it is a lot of fun and a good way to pass the time until the band pass through your town again.

Gold Wave (Boost Ventilator) * * * * The thing about being from the east coast is that you can be pretty sure the rest of the country will ignore you until forced not to. Mostly unknown due to the gaping cultural void between Fredericton and Quebec City, Windom Earle has been an instrumental synth-rock staple in Halifax for four albums now. A home-recording project for man-about-the-North-End Stephan MacLeod, Gold Wave is the band's most delirious outing yet. Opening with an oddly garage-rocky version of "Get On Into It," (which appeared on a MacLeod-curated compiIation last year), they turn in the highly original "Forked Wrist Waltz" before getting all squishy and delicious with "Guitorgan." Sharp Like Knives & Windom Earle at Broken City- July 11, 2006

Calgary got a taste of east coast punk and newwave music last night as Halifax based Sharp Like Knives and Windom Earle hammered out songs like demons at Broken City. Windom Earle opened to the few in attendance - maybe because Calgary was having a hangover from the first weekend of stampede, but they sure did a good job at making those present enjoy the music. The three man band of Stephan Macleod on guitar, Greg Boone on bass and Matt Packman on the Moog synthesizer , Boone and Packman being also members of SLK, played their techno-newwave beats with determination. The Moog synthesizer was interestingly maneuvered, not to mention the way it rocked back and forth on stage. Their gig ended with Macleod exploding with a solo rendition of Footloose. I'm sure all enjoyed it. Sharp Like Knives (Paul Hammond, Mark Gillis, Adam Seward, Matt Packman and Greg Boone) delivered a high energy punk performance, not only musically, but also on stage. The sweat off their foreheads was testimony of that. As more people were trickling into the venue, the dance floor was slowly filling up, and SLK were sure able to make them dance, and even mosh a little bit. Theses days, there are many ways to characterize a music genre. SLK could be playing dance-punk, punk-rock, hardcore or anything in between, but Paul Hammond refers to it simply as punk. Think of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, mixed with ELP. Add more speed. Both bands will be doing a loop through Vancouver, then will be back in Calgary on July 16 at Weeds Cafe. This is great opportunity to cap up your stampede partying with a taste of east dance-punk, or simply punk. Check em out!

The mostly instrumental three-piece featuring guitar, bass and keys with programmed beats danced through a well-crafted collection of catchy New Order- and Postal Service-inspired jams. But it wasn't until their endearing karaoke-esque covers of A-ha's classic electro-jam Take On Me and Kelly Clarkson's Since U Been Gone that it really clicked: these guys are the shit."

Yup, this Haligonian affair boasts 11 members in the CD credits, and yes, glockenspiel figures prominently. But chamber pop this ain't. The one proper song, with vocals and standard structure, is "Kitten vs. Pegasus," which unfortunately comes off like a Modern English number, and that we don’t need (the macho-meltdown joke of "Ted Nugent" wears thin fast too). But the rest isn't songs so much as motifs worked to perfection, grafting together surf, new wave, math rock and the aforementioned orch-pop element to excellent, energetic, harmonious effect. The propulsive "Get On Into It" bears shades of Shadowy Men, "Guitorgan" is pumped up and powerful, and "You Can't Dance to Dreams," playing a sweet piano pattern off explosive drums, closes the record with class. 8/10 (Rupert Bottenberg)

What is arguably the most exciting live act to surface recently in Halifax backs it up on record. Windom Earle, the Jeff Coll Five and Operation Impact arrived from PEI a few years ago and are featured interchangeably here. Stephan MacLeod is a creative force in all three. An ’80s retro drum-machine foundation is corrupted beautifully by eccentricity. Who knew the rhythmic power that lay in the phrase “Horrible physical features”? The instrumental “Screw Wave” has an obsessive-compulsive urgency in its groove. Windom Earle gives techno such a wedgie, it might be more human. — Doug Taylor

It is probably a good thing that Mark Black opened up the proceedings because his peculiar Powerpoint slideshow with running commentary could have bombed in the most spectacular way. But it didn’t. With surreal stories about David Blaine and Jem & The Holograms, he made people laugh. Hailing from Halifax via Charlottetown, Windom Earle were the most traditional act of the night, with their four members playing live (although an iPod did provide some backing). With a focus on keyboards and glockenspiel, it was hard not to smile at their happy, fun, danceable songs. Their choice of obligatory cover was Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone,” which they completely eviscerated, much to the delight of everyone. Then Books On Tape, aka Todd Drootin, took command of the room with his spiky, punk-y beats. Crouched over a table packed to the gills with equipment, he bobbed and weaved back and forth, pushing buttons and scribbling on a touch pad, making a joyous noise that was difficult to ignore, but in a good way. Live, Drootin has an energy level that has never been captured on CD (although some of it might have been margarita-fuelled), yet he seemed so focussed, like he knew exactly what he was doing. Every move had purpose and technically it was almost faultless. But the act that won the hearts and minds of the audience was A/V. Philip Clark is no stranger to the Halifax music scene of the last decade, playing with the likes of Rebecca West and Nebraska Girl. He still does the indie rock thing from time to time, but when he puts on his A/V hat, he switches on all his gizmos and gadgets. His blend of pop and electronic music is so accessible that it didn’t take long for the dance floor to start moving. The crowd were so into it that they didn’t notice the mundane lyrics, which only serve to show that Clark has a rhyming dictionary. But he does know his way around a groovy tune and that alone can erase a multitude of sins.
